Northumbria University, located in the vibrant city of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, is a renowned institution known for its academic excellence and industry-focused education.

The institution was named University of the Year 2022 in the prestigious Times Higher Education (THE) Awards. This marked Northumbria’s remarkable transformation to become the UK’s first research-intensive modern university. The strategy, which began in 2008, embedded quality research at the centre of everything that the University does, alongside a clear social mobility mission, and an alignment to business and the demands of the regional and local economy.

Other recent awards include “Top 25 for Research Power in the UK" and "Top 25 in the UK for Graduates in Highly Skilled Employment".

Working with Northumbria University: Marketing, Operations and Systems (MOS) Department

Last year KEVRI began working with Northumbria University's Department of Marketing, Operations, and Systems (MOS) - a dynamic and innovative academic unit that prepares students for success in today's competitive business landscape.

With a strong focus on experiential learning and industry collaboration, the MOS Department offers a range of cutting-edge programs and courses and consists of around 65 international and diverse academic staff.

Faculty members are renowned experts in their fields, bringing real-world experience and research insights to their Knowledge Exchange plans, projects and collaborative partnerships.

KEVRI analytics so far

The Northumbria MOS Department identified 34 Knowledge Exchange Practitioners and 27 Strategic Partnerships across the Department in 2023 as soon as they kickstarted the KEVRI platform.

MOS staff members found it beneficial to log collaborations into the software so they could begin to identify key industry partners and support colleagues' projects through extra resources and funding opportunities.

From the KEVRI Analytics Dashboard, MOS users demonstrated a range of KEF perspectives.

Many partnerships and collaborations submitted into the KEVRI platform focused on:

➤ Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and Graduate Start Ups

➤ Research Partnerships

➤ Working with Businesses

➤ Public and Community Engagement (PCE)

Collaborations To Watch: Nesta x Northumbria

One key collaboration making headlines is the Making Academics Knowledge Exchange Ready (MAKER) programme between Innovation Growth Lab (IGL) NESTA and three Small Business Charter accredited business schools: Manchester Metropolitan, Ulster University, and Northumbria’s Newcastle Business School.

As the Small Business Charter (SBC) blog outlines, Northumbria University has been chosen by the Innovation Growth Lab (IGL) - hosted at the UK’s innovation agency for social good NESTA - to join its University-Industry Impact Accelerator Programme aimed at experimenting to advance university-industry collaboration and knowledge exchange.
